Dachshund Pattern
Dachshunds come in all sizes and colors. I wanted to take some time to write this post to share about all the possibilities that come from a Dachshund breeding. First, let’s go through the colors.

Markings
Dapple
With a dapple pattern, Dachshunds have one main coat color, and the dapple pattern appears as lighter patches of fur mixed in. In order to produce a dapple puppy, one parent must have the dapple pattern. A Dachshund is considered to be dapple if it has even one tiny dapple patch on it.Double Dapple
Double Dapple is not a recognized Breed Standard pattern. This pattern can happen as a result of two dapples being bred together. Double dapple usually means the pup has a large area of white on their body. There are health complications associated with the double dapper pattern, so it should never be a focus of breeding.Piebald
Piebald only occurs when both parents are piebald or carry the gene. Piebald appears as solid patches of color on a white background. Like our Cookies. These puppies may be incorrectly called “tricolored” if they have spots of more than one color. Cookies would be a Black & Tan Piebald.Brindle
You may think of brindle as a zebra or tiger pattern. These pups have darker stripes over their base color. As with most patterns, one parent must be brindle to produce a brindle pup.
While breeders may plan a breeding in hopes of resulting in a specific color or pattern, a responsible breeder will make sure that they do this in an ethical manner. As mentioned, some markings have associated health risks, and only an experienced and responsible breeder should even attempt such a pairing.
It also goes without saying that we can never guarantee the results of a breeding. Though we do our best to produce a variety of coats & colors, we can’t control what our mothers give us. What we can control is loving them unconditionally, no matter what color or markings they end up with.
